Arrozaria Restaurant

João Tiago Aguiar, arquitectos as Architects

The main challenge was to create a cool, fresh and innovative restaurant in the middle of a shopping mall’s food court. To design something clear and simple but something that at the same time could stand out of all the ‘noise’ that commercial areas like these always bring along.

An exclusive all sorts of “rice courses” restaurant that although transpiring modernity, should pass the idea of traditional food made with biological ingredients. The feeling of being a reinvented Portuguese traditional restaurant should always be present and reminded somehow.

The space wasn’t very big but the client wanted the cook to be seen and to give the idea of a biological restaurant with natural ingredients in opposition to all the fast food restaurants that usually invade this sort of commercial facilities.

The concept was to divide the space in 2 floors : ground-floor for kitchen and public and the 1st floor for storage. White Portuguese traditional hand-made tiles fold the walls with all the various different types of rice dishes written in vinyl on top of it. Apart from this a big green box hangs from the ceiling in order to create the perfect balance with the green counter on the ground-floor.
