São Roque Restaurant

A2OFFICE as Architects

This project consists of the renovation of São Roque, a restaurant with tradition in the city of Vila do Conde but that was closed since some years ago. The aim was to change the concept of the restaurant, creating a new dining room, which should take a more contemporary and warm character. Some fixed carpentry was kept, although painted in another color and the original wooden tables were incorporated into the intervention.

The existing ceiling was demolished and then applied sound absorption panels and a new final coating on wooden slatted that allows, besides the harmonious connection between existing materials, to cut the reverberation in space. Through the slatted comes the lighting lamps in retro style with a warm tone of light, which contrasts with the neutral colors that cover the walls and floor. The original ceramic floor was covered with a new deck with excellent acoustic properties. It was applied a set of black tubes that create the necessary division of spaces without closing them. In this sense, there are two distinct areas in the room: one that pointed to a bench filled with pads on a more intimate setting, and the other occupied by a high table supported in the windowsill, relating to, through this, with the small square and the facade of the Chapel of São Roque, which gives its name to the restaurant.
