Southampton Beach House

On a narrow peninsula in Southampton, this 12,000 square foot house, like Janus, the Roman god of the gate, faces two directions, the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and Shinnecock Bay to the northwest. Four stone pillars anchor the house, defining a symmetrical frame that allows for different aspects to the ocean and bay sides. Facing the bay are teak clad volumes that frame the entry ramp and the stair to the main living areas above. Echoing the horizon, the house is a compact elongated frame of sand colored limestone that reflects the ocean beach. A tall fireplace that is also open to the roof terrace balances the horizontality of the main volume of the house.

Programmatically, the garage, guest rooms and media/game room are on the ground level, along with a walkway to the beach that traces the contours of the dunes. On the main level are the open kitchen living and dining room along with the master and children’s bedrooms. A broad terrace and pool are extensions of the interior of the house. The living room opens onto a terraced patio and pool beyond. Above, a wing-like canopy clad in zinc extends out shading the sun terrace. At the roof, a terrace creates an outdoor room with spectacular views of the ocean and the bay. Bold sculptural forms, the vents and skylights are clad in zinc, punctuating the broad expanse of the terrace. Their surfaces- gray and flat in the morning light- take on a warmer hue as the sun rises in the sky. At sunset, they are ablaze with color.
