Located in the Swedish Lapland, The Treehotel is known for its broad diversity of cabins, each having a distinctive identity that interacts with the unique surrounding forest environment. In collaboration with Treehotel and Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman, the new BIG-designed hotel room Biosphere will feature a façade of 350 birdhouses.

Called Biosphere, the motivation behind the hotel room concept is to decrease the downward spiral of the bird population in the Swedish forest, instead strengthening the biosphere and the natural habitat. It has been shown in the works of Swedish ornithologists and the Country Administrative Board that forest practices have resulted in a reduced number of natural holes in trees where breeding birds nest.

Furthermore, climate change has led to an insect boom occurring earlier in the year, leaving eggs hatching once the insect peak has passed. The installation of the bird's nests to the hotel concept facade is therefore an important measure both in terms of providing habitat but also in inspiring visitors to do the same.

The Biosphere is accessed via a suspended bridge that slopes from the ground to the top of the trees. The interior of the 34m2 hotel room incorporates rich dark interiors and organic materials inspired by the surrounding landscape, which further serves to reinforce the visitor's gaze outwards and focus on the natural beauty of the surroundings. Balanced by an exterior triple-glazed façade, guests are provided with an intimate, immersive experience.
