By strategically applying colour blocking techniques to flexibility designed spaces, design studio Masquespacio has created a uniquely student-focused atmosphere for the Resa Bilbao Student Residency in Bilbao.

Masquespacio was initially engaged by the Greystar Group – Resa, a leader company in specialized student accommodations, to develop a uniform aesthetic and visual/brand strategy for their upcoming student residency projects. The housing provider subsequently requested that Masquespacio design their second showcase student residence in Bilbao.

During the brand development phase, Masquespacio determined the importance of providing opportunities for students to share experiences as a ‘community’ within their living space. As such, the Bilbao project features a flexible layout with different interconnected zones. Elements such as flexible glass walls allow different zones to be closed off, divided into separated uses for unrelated events, or open to all.

Budget was a determining factor throughout the design process with a clear client mandated objective to find creative design solutions that can work within a limited budget. As such, Masquespacio was involved from the early construction phase of the project in selecting low-cost building materials such as brick and concrete that would not require the installation of additional finishing materials. All services and ductwork were also left exposed, a cost-savings measure that at the same time lends a contemporary, industrial look.

The technique of colour blocking was also employed to create a strong yet low-cost visual impact and at the same time distinguish different zones within an open space. Striking colour combinations include baby pink against fiery red and lavender against a bold yellow.

Colour blocking was also used in the design for the residence’s exterior terrace. Here, vibrant colour is applied to the flooring and the walls as well as on the furniture for a fun and playful exterior space.
