In the centre of Hanoi, Ch House by ODDO Architects is designed as a harmonious home for a three-generation family that wants to enhance their sense of traditional family life. The house is located on a site measuring 4.2-meters wide and 35-meters long, a typical plot size of the long and narrow local tube houses that surround. The layout of the house is inspired by the traditional courtyard houses of Hanoi, which bring in plenty of natural light and ventilation.

The house is divided into two zones: a commercial area on two floors and a family area. The common spaces for the family, including the living room, library, dining room and kitchen, are situated on different levels with varying ceiling heights that despite the limited width of the house allow for a continuous spatial complexity and flowing open spaces that encourage communication amongst family members.

Two children’s bedrooms are situated above the main common area, next to the void space, in close proximity to family members downstairs. The quietest area is located at the innermost part of the house and accommodates bedrooms for the parents and grandparents.

Given the hectic nature of Hanoi and lack of greenspace, the house includes numerous trees and plants to create a peaceful living space that releases stress caused by the city’s environmental problems.

The exterior of the house is designed as a double-layer, with an outer layer made from perforated concrete block and a steel-framed glass inner layer. The façade is designed with a large window, providing more light to fill the house when needed and giving the façade a more attractive look.
