3D textile facade for Hermès

The 3D textile facade creates the intimate atmosphere that expresses the brand's exclusive style. While being progressively transparent towards the sky to let natural daylight in, the gradient of denser weavings and folds mantles the clients in serene privacy. The adaptive architecture changes the sound, light and space that customers experience. At the same time, the appearance of the seclusion screen itself changes when clients move through the space and look from other perspectives. The Hermès Shanghai Qiantan Taikoo Li store recently opened its doors in Shanghai, China. Studio Samira Boon was commissioned by the Parisian architecture firm RDAI, responsible for the interior design of Hermès worldwide, to design and produce... En savoir plus

Present-Pasts for an Emotional Context

To define a position in a context that we all hope will be transitional is very difficult, even though we have a strong feeling that it will bring about a change in our lives, whether clinical, material, procedural or socially. This is further compounded by the fact that our own understanding is evolving as the months go by, so the proposal that won this curatorial opportunity in September 2020 will probably not be the same as the one explained today, in March 2021, or the one that will finally be exhibited in May this year. And yet, as good creatures of habit, it is our hope that life will go back to what it was before the pandemic, or at least something similar.   We believe that architecture today should be interpreted as a social... Textil ocean

In the latest edition of Hostelco 2018, the project of Boma studio and Carmela Martí , ‘Immerse yourself into a textile ocean’, located at Hostelco – Live Hotel, became a must see for all the fair attendees. The room transported the visitors directly to the sea in every way, wrapping them in a curtain ocean with a full spectrum of deep blues and the sound of the waves and the fresh scent of the water. A small haven of tranquility which was attended by many people who wanted to take a break from the hectic pace of the fair.   This original idea, whose design was by  BoMa estudio, is a “performance” to transmit the conviction that the ‘New Hotel’ is not only a place to spend the nig... Fort 4 - Mortsel (near Antwerp)

This sail sculpture, designed by architect Amandus Vanquaille, was designed for a specific military building dating 1862. The typical architecture of that time does not allow any access to the inner courtyard (called the ‘reduit’ in military terms). The widest entrance was 98cm. At the outside there are moats, ramparts, ditches and fortifications, all built to protect the inner courtyard from intrusion. But how to build a roof over this large courtyard, if anyone can access with building materials or cranes? The answer is simple: making a flexible roof that one can carry in, like a large worm, through the inner corridors and through the narrow porches. The complete membrane roof exists of 8 parts (8 separate vaults) each small enough to be... En savoir plus

Gooik

ContextGooik is mentioned as belonging to the Abbey of Saint Gertrudus as from the 9th century. The church of Gooik is a registered building. In front of the church the parking space is in fact the centre of the village, which had in previous times a much more prominent meaning in the settlement. With input from the inhabitants a reconversion was planned.VisionIt was the aim that this central location of Gooik should have again its prominent role in the life of the community: covering friends and families at weddings when accessing the church, allowing the emplacement and linking the individual market stalls during the annual market, sheltering the benches, designed for this location, to allow the villagers to sit and talk together…It was t... Both at home and abroad, Nomad Concept built up a solid reputation with its ultralight, translucent sails, inspired by Tibetan nomadic tents. Here we give some examples of sails covering public spaces in parks or squares. In al those examples, the covered space can be used by the public for barbeques, festivities, weddings or simply gatherings of the youth. Is there anything more beautiful than a free covered place in a nice park that people can reserve for their wedding? Is there anything more nice than a free place you can reserve for your family p... En savoir plus

Julianus Tongeren - Belgium

Literally balancing between art, design and architecture, searching the extremities of materials, static design and adequate forms, this sail sculpture spans it’s huge wings like a dynamic bird or dragon above the courtyard of the former monastery in Tongeren (Belgium). A large free-span structure of 37m x 37 is supported by 3 fly- ing masts of each 17meter high, balancing on stainless steel wires. No mast touches the ground to keep the free space of the courtyard. A ‘beak’ snaps to the pond and solitary tree in the courtyard. Because of the dramatic sculptural effect of this mem- brane, the architect calls his realization “sail sculpture”. The membrane in Tongeren is realized in PTFE with a translucency of 40%. Un- der the grey and often... En savoir plus
