WORK Architecture Company
WORKac is a New York City-based firm developing architectural and urban planning projects that engage issues of culture and consciousness, nature and artifice, surrealism and pragmatism.
Recent projects include the winning competition entry for a new cultural center on New Holland Island in Saint Petersburg, Russia, a museum extension for the Blaffer Museum, Houston, a branch library for Kew Gardens Hills in Queens, and the first Edible Schoolyard New York City with chef Alice Waters. WORKac’s entry for the redesign of Hua Qiang Bei Road, was recently awarded first place in the international competition for the redesign of Shenzhen’s busiest shopping street.
In 2010, WORKac was the recipient of a New York Design Commission award and nominated for the Chernikhov Prize. In 2009, WORKac was honored at the White House as Finalist for a National Design Award and in 2008, the firm was selected for the Architectural League’s Emerging Voices series and identified by Icon Magazine as one of the 25 most-influential new architecture firms in the world, winning several AIA Merit Awards, three “Best of 2008” awards, and a MASterwork Award from the Municipal Arts Society.
The practice is supplemented by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood’s academic involvement and research, focusing on the relationship between ecology and urbanism. This research is the subject of their book ’49 Cities’, published in 2009 by the Storefront for Art and Architecture.
Dan Wood, AIA, LEED received his BA at the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters degree from Columbia University. Wood is an Adjunct Professor at Princeton University’s School of Architecture. He has taught at the TU Delft, the Cooper Union, Columbia University, Ohio State University and the Berkeley School of Environmental Design, as the Friedman Distinguished Chair.
Wood is originally from Rhode Island and has lived in Paris and for many years in the Netherlands before moving to New York in 2002. Dan Wood is a licensed architect in the State of New York.
Amale Andraos received her B.Arch from McGill University in Montreal and her M.Arch from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She is a full-time Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and has taught at numerous institutions including Princeton, Harvard and Columbia Universities, the University of Pennsylvania, the Parsons school of design, NY Institute of Technology and the American University in Beirut.
Andraos was born in Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived in Saudi Arabia, France, Canada and the Netherlands prior to moving to New York in 2002. She serves on the Architectural League of New York’s Board of Directors.
