On the banks of a dam in Piracaia, in the countryside of São Paulo, a pergola originally constructed 30 years ago has been completely renovated by Reinach Mendonça Arquitetos Associados. The renovation is most notable and stunning for the absence of two front columns, a design feat that inspires the project’s name: Pergolado dos Dois Apoios (Two Supports' Pergola).

The pergola constructed previously on the site was a smaller, vernacular shelter comprising four eucalyptus logs as columns and covered with bamboo poles. After an unexpected flood, this structure was destroyed.

The new pergola is a metallic structure measuring 6 x 6 metres. Offering an increase in shaded area, the absence of front columns, as well as the slender nature of the profile for the columns that are required, affords completely unobstructed views over the landscape.

Further, a wooden deck helps to define the space, which includes a longitudinal bench and bamboo ceiling. At the back of the pergola there is a large cabinet for the storage of nautical tools.
