Boulevard Wharf

Boulevard Wharf is a brand-new development located on Castle Boulevard and situated along the canal, serving both University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University students.  This amazing, waterfront development offers 66 self-contained luxury studios and has various internal and external communal spaces including a gym, cinema room and study pods.

The development is on the waterfront and has been built using traditional brick and steel methods to fit in and be sympathetic to the local architecture. The development contains high quality finishes such as polished concrete floors, tactile textured wall paper and furniture from interior brands such as Hay, Muuto, LucePlan providing a timeless urban interior. Each of the 66 studios have been designed with comfort and quality in mind and there are 7 studio room designs all furnished in partnership with world-class interior design brands.

The development is broken up into three buildings allowing the street and pavement to continue to connect with the canal side and encourages further interaction of users and public within the central external private courtyard.  The narrow shape of the site and its curved canal side frontage made logical sense to adopt a shape and form inspired by narrow boats. The roofs overhang elaborated with top floor set back gives reference to the cabin on the narrow boat as we see it.  Interesting brick detailing with Flemish brick bond and projection header detail adding further interest and human scale in a subtle way. The building mass is further articulated by utilising deep window reveals with large openings to complement its modern footprint.

The development is sustainable in its intended nature in that it utilised reclaim land from the canal side.  A technological sustainable element included within the design is a centralised plant in each of its three blocks to generate domestic hot water for the apartments. This provides an ideal opportunity to incorporate renewable / energy efficient sources of heat generation.

The construction of Boulevard Wharf was a very complex job to due to the unusual dimensions of the 11-metre-wide site and its proximity to the city’s canal. Because of this, a kayak formed part of the team’s emergency rescue procedure, meaning that should any items inadvertently fall into the canal, they could be easily retrieved.
