Charles Carter Building, Lancaster University

The 4,000 sqm Charles Carter building will provide versatile learning and teaching environments within a sustainable, four-storey structure that reflects the university's modernist heritage. The design will create a new destination within the current JMP-designed masterplan, forming a range of adaptable spaces for the university’s Management School as well as communal working environments for all departments.

The Charles Carter building, which connects to the central spine of the campus, is the fifth project completed by JMP for the university. It has been designed to create a robust and light-filled building for the university’s 6* Management School. At the heart of the structure is a large full-height atrium space, which brings natural light into the core of the building through a glazed roof light and provides clear visual connections between departments.

The building's exterior has a strong, formal presence. As in the interior, the facades incorporate a select number of high-quality materials. A monochromatic palette of black brick, glass and aluminium creates simple rhythms in the façade, adding a distinct clarity to the building and emphasising its pragmatic structure and programming.

The Charles Carter building, named after the university’s founding Vice Chancellor, is one of a series of projects undertaken by JMP for Lancaster University, which also includes the “Learning Zone” and Postgraduate Statistics Centre.

Aidan Potter, Director at JMP, said: “The original masterplan at Lancaster, created a subtle and well-scaled campus. In many regards our work has been to reveal and clarify this framework and re-animate the campus.”

Mark Swindlehurst, Director of Facilities at Lancaster University, said: “JMP’s design for the Charles Carter building has demonstrated their ability to produce a first class educational building at low cost, bringing something new and distinct to the campus.”
