Douwe Egberts coffee and tea bar, Amsterdam

Concern was asked by D.E. Masterblenders (DEMB) to design the flagship location of Douwe Egberts’ D.E.Koffie- & Theehuis.A new concept store, located on the Oosterdokseiland in Amsterdam, just around the corner from the DEMB head office.

The starting point for the Coffee & Teahouse is Douwe Egberts’ rich heritage, with special attention being payed to the beginning of the 20th century – the time when the brand first became powerful and changed from a grocery store to a coffee house and roastery.

The interior of the D.E. Koffie- & Theehuis is characterized by the use of 1920’s and 30’s elements. The interior refers to the period when consumerism gave way to industrialism, when products such as coffee an tea, but also design furniture became accessible for a large group of the population. The interior elements, including this rich heritage have been brought into the present (and the future) with materials such as corian, stainless steel and bamboo being used.

Keeping a possible roll-out of this new concept in mind, the interior elements have been designed to be extremely flexible, making translation into other locations much more straightforward. For example, Concern is currently working on the development of a new ‘out of home’ line.

Alongside the above mentioned Douwe Egberts formulas, Concern is currently working on various new Coffee Company locations for DEMB.
