Sakura Complex

The site is situated in a quiet residential area near Ebisu Station in Tokyo. It faces the frontal road and a neighborhood park on the south side, sandwitched between neighboring houses on the east and the west, and open on the north side.

In spring you can enjoy a fantastic view of the row of cherry trees (“sakura” in Japanese) in full bloom along the southern road.

The client's request is to design a two-family house for his family and his parents.

We intend to design a house that is open towards south and north, to provide beautiful views as well as natural flow of wind and light inside.

We come up with a structural system that successfully achieves a completely open space along the south-north direction. The floors are supported by wall-columns located on east and west sides, and cantilevered by three meters towards the south and the north.

Contrasting the dynamic cantilevers on the second and third floors, the first floor and the basement are designed in small scale so that they are integrated into the streetscape.
