“In a galaxy far, far away”

In what is described as a “shared galactic obsession,” Design Matrix Inc. worked with their Star Wars hobbyist client to transform an existing storage room above a garage into a spaceship fantasy. The 275-square-feet (25 square meters) room is fitted with storage areas and display units that house all manner of Star Wars memorabilia.

Design Matrix Inc. collaborated with the small team of carpenters from Ontario-based Hindle Finishing Systems to help realize its initial design concepts. The 5-year design-build project incorporates a multitude of elements and features, all of which are underpinned by Hindle’s skill in woodworking.

The “spacecraft” is entered via automated sliding doors: at the push of a button, they open with a Star Wars-esque swoosh, revealing an intricate interior. Custom-made woodwork includes an array of angled glass storage and display cabinets as well as closed storage solutions. A central bulkhead was constructed along with ceiling panels; overhead cabinets with touch latch releases were also installed. Gas pistons assist in opening larger cabinets and with Hindle’s meticulous attention to detail, all hinges are cleverly concealed. With around 100 panels fitted to the walls, the space has many layers and dimensions.

Lighting plays a key role in bringing the spacecraft-themed room to life. In addition to wall and cabinetry lighting, recessed strip lighting and RBG LED lighting create a futuristic effect. The designers sourced electronic waste and discarded circuit boards from scrap yards, fashioning these elements into fake electronics. Decorative ventilation and ducts add to the overall experience.

Muted gray tones highlight the Star Wars collectibles and mimic the interior of real and imagined spacecraft. In a bid to heighten the sense of fantasy, a large geometric window features fiber optic lighting and simulates a galaxy of twinkling stars.
