Outside Basel in the calm neighbourhood of Binningen, Switzerland, this semi-detached house by KOHLE... More
Renowned architecture office Baranowitz + Kronenberg (B+K) has designed the flagship New York showroom for high-end designer jewellery brand Âme in Lower Manhattan. In a nod to the bustling urban context that surrounds, the architects drew inspiration for the space from the shadows of the undulating cast-iron facades typical of this district.
Upon entering the space, the sharp contrast between stainless steel polished surfaces and peripheral steel panelled walls is immediately apparent. The dark peripheral envelope of the interior is executed with vertically soaring rolled steel panels in a bold and abstract pattern, creating a sharp backdrop for the central jewellery displays. Along with the monochromatic colour palette, the design expresses the cutting-edge, modern feel of the brand, while still emphasis still remains on the jewellery pieces themselves.
The simple floorplan allows the space to be as intuitive as possible for shoppers walking among the displays. To further enhance Âme’s design strategy, music, scent and touch are all key elements in the sensory retail experience. A bespoke scent created by British perfume designer Azzi Glasser for the brand is a permanent feature present throughout. In terms of showcasing the product, each piece of Elinor Avni designed jewellery is uniquely housed inside its own capsule and state of the art glass cloche, giving the impression that it is served rather than displayed. The practice designed with this presentation in mind to encourage a slower journey around the store and engagement in the act of revealing and contemplating. The space also features a small bar to sit and enjoy a drink.
The opening of this flagship store follows the success of the B+K’s first store designed for the brand in Los Angeles.
