In South Pasadena, California, this residential project by Medium Plenty offers a modern-day communal retreat that accommodates a multi-generational family.
The concept is a redesign of an existing 90+-year-old single-family home and a complete interior renovation alongside transforming the previously existing garage into a new dwelling unit. The additional living space provides independent living quarters for the client’s mother, only a few steps away from the main house.
The main part of the primary residence was opened up by flooding the single-level space with natural light through large skylights.
A simple palette of woods enriched the interior concept. Customized details include wrap-around millwork extending from the kitchen to the living room, where the family library and various collectables, including vintage record players, are held.
The concept creates a separate yet communal living for the entire family of five. Similar elements are used in both the primary residence and the new dwelling. These elements include stained, black-slatted wood overhangs, black frame windows, and luminous white interiors with feature colour walls.
