The government of Basel-Stadt announced this week they will go ahead with a plan to place a Sekundarschule (middle school) for 600 students on top of the MParc Dreispitz shopping center.
The winning plan from 2017 by Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with the Christoph Merian Foundation and the Migros Cooperative Basel entailed a new district of around 800 apartments, two spacious green spaces, a neighborhood meeting place, as well as cafes and restaurants.
The architects are especially pleased the municipality gives the green light to the stacking of uses in the inner city. The plan aims to set a benchmark for innovative densification that exemplifies reasonable land use, and preservation of green spaces by building on the built.
The landscaped roof will have a multipurpose gymnasium available in the evenings for sports clubs, associations and other activities. Alongside the school’s athletic and recreation areas, gardens and other outdoor areas will be publicly accessible to the residents of Gundeldingen and visitors at all times.
