MYMORY: A beautifully executed boutique hotel conversion in Hangzhou

20 Feb 2020  •  Innovations  •  By Allie Shiell

Situated on a scenic mountain site in Hangzhou, MYMORY is a boutique hotel design and conversion by atelier RIGHT HUB that connects a well-preserved house from the 1970’s to a new, modern building finished with textured concrete. The two buildings are connected via a glass corridor and together create four courtyards.

The existing house is made up of rammed earth walls and wood frame construction, both of which have been repaired and reinforced. Further to this, recycled bricks have been applied as a ‘coat’ of sorts to the rammed earth walls. The wood structure remains exposed to the interior spaces, allowing traces of the old house’s history to remain.

The old house now contains a number of uses such as a lobby, reception, lounge, tea room, dry kitchen, wet kitchen, dining room and two suites on the second floor. Natural light has been brought into these existing suites via skylights. To the east of the old house, a new restaurant on the water has been constructed with steel structures and glass curtain walls.

The new building contains two new lounges with panoramic views through glass curtain walling. Five suites with private viewing balconies are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The suites have spectacular interior glazing and natural light. Echoing this sense of brightness and transparency, the ensuite bathrooms have been designed as ‘Glass Boxes’. A curtain with a hidden track is installed to ensure privacy. It is understood that perforated wood screens as ‘Skin’ will be installed in the future.

A final feature of note is a swimming pool in the west courtyard that can accommodate 6 to 8 people at a time. The section between the swimming pool and sunken plaza forms a ‘bar’ where guests can socialize. Views from the pool look out over a distance village without hindrance.
