The Drum Room at West Java’s Blackbird Hotel creates intrigue with three private garden cabins

In the existing 200 square meter garden of the Blackbird Hotel in Bandung City, West Java, each of these three cabin additions provides an otherworldly honeymoon suite experience. The design concept, by RDMA, began by translating the spaces needed for the suites into tubular, drum-like shapes that emerge from the ground and into the landscape.

The radial nature of the spaces provides a unique spatial experience for guests, contrasting with the mainly orthogonal shapes of the hotel’s main buildings.

Constructed in wood, the cabins features different shades of brown and a variety  of different wood textures. On the exterior, the wooden cladding is contoured using raised and sunken surfaces, resulting in an interplay that is not only aesthetic but also adds air and ventilation, as well as interior light.

Two-storeys in height, the honeymoon suites are largely private and secluded from the outside world.   The second floor is opened-up with skylights around the circumference of the radial floor plan, while narrow side windows covered with wooden grills allow in additional light.

The interior takes an opposite approach to privacy with minimal partitions and doors. The bedroom and ensuite, for example, are separated by a staircase clad with perforated metal sheets, ensuring sunlight from the second floor illuminates the space below.
