The Natural Pavilion by DP6 architectuurstudio responds to key land-use challenges in the Netherlands

4 Jul 2022  •  News  •  By Allie Shiell

Designed for the Floriade 2022 Expo, The Natural Pavilion by DP6 architectuurstudio is a nearly 100% biobased, circular concept that can ultimately be disassembled and built in a different configuration on a secondary site. The design is a response to challenges facing land-use in the Netherlands including a housing shortage, need for a more sustainable agricultural sector, fostering of biodiversity, and climate adaptation.

An example of scaling up biobased solutions, the construction concept is simple and based around two core ideas. Firstly, the use of locally-sourced wooden beams afford a clear construction framework connected by universal steel joints and secondly, a versatile application of components into the pavilion’s framework with biologically-sourced and recycled materials included in the CLT floors and walls, as well as windows utilizing recycled glass. The flexibility in design allows for the creation of any type of space – along with the necessary acoustic and/or fire safety demands.

In addition to the use of wood, the design specifies a light foundation of wooden piles and an integration of green elements into the building. Wall elements are ‘plug-and-play’ in the sense they are prefabricated in the workshop, a low carbon emission choice.

The architects explain the pavilion is an example of how circular and biobased concepts can be developed quickly and efficiently on an industrial scale.
