Decentralized power plant for district heating in the Hart van Zuid district.
Historical ground
We are here on historical ground; the industrial growth of the city took place here in the last century. Well-known metal factories such as Stork and Dikkers have been responsible for the flourishing of Hengelo for more than 100 years.

The industrial past remains tangible
Where once the bustling heart of Hengelo was beating, the district ‘Hart van Zuid’ is now rising. Nearly fifty hectares of new city are being built on the site of the former factory complexes. The industrial past remains tangible; the former closedness of the area gives way to openness and dynamics. De avenue ‘Laan Hart van Zuid’ is the backbone of the transformation to a residential area. In addition to a new entrance to the city, the avenue is part of the new identity of Hart van Zuid and thus of Hengelo.

District heating power plant
In 2041, the municipality of Hengelo wants to provide 5,000 homes and 500,000 m² of businesses and institutions with sustainable heat. The municipality therefore installed the district heat network in 2008 to reduce CO2 emissions and dependence on gas. The power plant provides the new district with city heating, marking the transition to low carbon heat. The heated water flows from DEC Noord to the customers (houses, schools, companies) in the district.

Streamlined architecture
With its striking chimney, this highly modern building forms a landmark in the city. The streamlined design matches the advanced function of the building; a built machine that consists of an advanced technical system of heat boilers and transport pipes. Local history and the new function come together in a special way in the facade design. Curved black-metal facades are reminiscent of the enormous steel boilers and turbines that were previously made in the metal factories. At the same time, the dynamic design fits like a shiny car with the latest technologies that it houses.

All doors and gates are invisible because they are accurately detailed within the facade grid. The elongated, gold-colored slot strengthens the expression of the building. It lights up and brings the building to life in the evening.
