In recent years, news of the environmental problems created bythe exponential growth in emissions and the growing demand forenergy, have finally reached the ears of most European citizens, who now realise that these are issues to be faced today, so asnot to destroy tomorrow. This has resulted in those who are most aware of the impact ontheir own productivity equipping themselves, within their ownfields, to formulate valid reposes to the twin challenges of ecocompatibilityand energy saving. In the building world, massive research and development resourcesare going into energy-saving materials and technologiesaimed at reducing air pollution. The Zecca Group has long been in the vanguard of the Italian prefabricated sector in the industrial, residential, service and infrastructure building industry. They Lombardy-based company is focusing ever more attention on this pressing need for better levels of thermal insulation, leading them to develop a prefabricated product, combining thefunctions of cladding and thermal insulation, the “PannelloIsolante Zecca”, more concisely labelled PIZ.PIZ is an integrated cladding for buildings, in which the need forthermal insulation meets and satisfies the aesthetic imperative. These panels feature the coupling of a layer of cladding with aninsulating layer, a process carried out at the production unit.Zecca insulating panels first went into production in the 1990s,initially applied to commercial and industrial buildings. Constant research into technologies and innovation led to modificationand up-grading of this system to make it acceptable to the residential building market.Innovation and research continue to be the watchwords of Zecca, and working in partnership with the Chemistry Department at the Milan Polytechnic and other academic institutionsand laboratories, they have developed a new claddingpanel that they have baptised the “PIZ Intelligent Surface”.
