The 110 Walnut Street building in Glen Rose, Texas, is a ground-up studio and meeting space on a narrow, previously vacant lot along the historic town square. Positioned between two existing structures, the project responds to its context through a restrained scale and subtle setback, allowing adjacent masonry buildings to remain prominent. The design reinforces the rhythm of the streetscape while introducing a contemporary architectural language that complements the surrounding fabric.
A defining feature of the site is a tall rubble stone wall belonging to the neighboring property. Rather than concealing it, the project incorporates the wall as an integral architectural element that shapes the spatial experience. Entry is marked by a custom steel gate with bronze mesh panels, offering filtered views into a courtyard-like approach. Beyond, a covered walkway maintains a direct visual relationship to the stone wall, with the roof offset to admit natural light and emphasize the texture of the existing masonry.
The interior is organized around a clear and efficient plan. A small reception and gathering space anchors the layout, supported by a kitchenette and a private office pod. The primary meeting space is oriented toward the street, where large windows establish visual continuity with the town square and frame views toward the courthouse. A restrained material palette—concrete floors, lime-washed walls, charred wood cladding, white oak ceilings, and exposed steel—balances durability with warmth while expressing the building’s structure and craftsmanship.
Environmental and site considerations inform the project throughout. The building is elevated to address floodplain conditions, with a gently sloped entry sequence that maintains accessibility. Carefully placed window openings bring in natural light while preserving privacy, and integrated rain chains manage stormwater runoff.
