1914 Main Apartments is the first new construction apartment building in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, and one of the first developments along the new streetcar line. It utilizes public transportation via streetcar, bus and bike share as an asset to urban development. Unprecedented for KC, this allows for a parking ratio of 0.5 cars/unit and maximizes space to the units. Surrounded by some of KC’s best restaurants, bars, galleries and local shops, the city itself is the amenity package.

The design draws from the area’s strong warehouse context with a cast concrete podium base and metal panel portal frames above. The portals maximize views and light for the living units. Street-Side units connect to the city with projecting balconies, alternating by level to promote interaction and a sense of community between the renters, and to express the movement inherent with Main Street. The 8” horizontal metal panel planks relate in scale to the adjacent brick buildings, representing 3 vertical brick courses.
