5 Pointz Apartment Building

5 Pointz Apartment Building

In response to this unique history of the 5Pointz, the famed graffiti mecca in Queens, the design of the interior public spaces of the new residential towers was focused on reintroducing street art throughout the structure. With a scope including design for the entry lobbies, gallery, fitness center, business center, and game rooms, the architecture is aimed at creating opportunities for inviting back the local artists who once tagged the property to again paint the space and breathe life into the new structure. A simple architectural palette of polished concrete, wood plank, and blackened steel created an industrial aesthetic familiar to the neighborhood. Where detailed mill work or features wall may have otherwise been planned, blank canvases are instead incorporated into the interiors, for a rotating cast of local artists to come tag and re-tag, where the art will be literally embedded into the architecture. The entry lobby takes advantage of the cavernous 30’ ceilings with a double height TV screen in a tapered metal frame, featuring street-art documentaries throughout the day.
