Located at 947 Liberty Avenue, this new loft building houses 3 residential units and a 1st floor storefront. Set in an impossibly narrow lot—only 18-feet wide—the design of the building incorporates a sleek, asymmetric glass façade fronted by an exterior courtyard. The architect designed the complete project from the building shell and core to residential and commercial interiors, including retail finishes for a 1st floor bistro. The client commissioned a local internationally known artist to create a monumental sculpture to define the street-front edge of the courtyard. The building’s interiors illustrate a sophisticated, economical use of materials. Storage space, sleeping lofts, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry are organized in a compact, well-planned box leaving the remaining space completely open. Floor to ceiling windows offer tenants in the front units maximum daylight and unhindered views, giving the feeling of peering off from a veranda. The rear unit is a stacked, 2-floor unit connected by a spiral stair with sleeping/storage lofts on each level as well as additional shower/storage space on the upper level.

The 947 Liberty Avenue Lofts were featured in the March 2004 issue of Dwell Magazine. It won the Pittsburgh Chapter AIA Award 2003, and the Pittsburgh Magazine Superior Interiors Award for “New Construction” and “Multifamily Planned Community.”
