A13 Road, East London Highways Agency

BPR won a competitive interview to develop the design of
architectural and artistic interpretations of a road widening
programme to ease traffic congestion along the A 13 between the
East India Dock Link Tunnel and the A 117 Junction at Beckton. At
present the Borough of Newham is split in two by the A 13 which
is intrusive, massive and irrevocable. A clear visual identity was
established for the road so that its ambiguous relationship of serving
but alienating the community is resolved and the A13 becomes
a meaningful artery. The divided community is reunited by strong
pedestrian linkages providing safe and sheltered routes. The foot
& cycle bridges are articulated as distinctive sculptural symbols
of connection. The insertion of a ship wreck at Canning Town
roundabout and adoption of giant spark plugs at the section flyover
refelcts the boroughs vital and historic contribution to the docks, the
British empire, manufacturing of ships and steam engines and more
recently the motor industry at Dagenham.
