Two opening footbridges are proposed for Bellmouth passage in Canary Wharf, London.
The South Footbridge is a unique pair of swing bridges, which open to signal the entrance to Bellmouth Passage. The South Footbridge extends out over the dock to provide a crossing at two levels. This increases the capacity of the bridge and offers a weather protected route with an open deck passage above. A restaurant and bar is located at the centre of the bridge to enjoy the commanding view, animate the crossing and provide refreshment.
The North Bridge is located within the canyon created by the Canary Wharf skyscrapers. It is a single swing bascule bridge, which opens vertically to give a bold silhouette. The crossing is punctuated by seating areas in bay windows offering views along the passage. The footbridge is constructed of folded steel plate, which combines structure and enclosure and can be raised by a conventional electronic motor or a system of pumped water ballast within an eccentric chamber at the pivot point.
