The 24 private residences of the Above and Beyond Niseko resort are positioned in such a way that each building appears to hover over the edge of the site’s natural linear plateau. These luxury ski Chalets form a natural streetscape neighborhood whilst simultaneously maximizing views to both the ski fields and Mount Yotei. The chalets are clustered in couplets to both reduce the overall density of the scheme, but also to provide a unique playful connection between the holiday maker and their temporary neighbor. Each property is designed to be perceived as a heavy, protective timber cube floating above a lightweight base. Approached from the outset as bespoke snow sport architecture, each chalet has a wet and dry entrance, responding to the specific requirements of a snow sport enthusiast. On entering through the lower ground floor entrance space, the occupant will ascend through the base of the cube, entering into the snug interior. Choosing to invert the traditional format of residential properties, the large open plan living area is located on the upper floor of each property with the four en-suite bedrooms below. This consciously brought all life, light and activity up to the rooftops whilst maximizing the living area and the views over the tree tops. The interior design is derived entirely from the architecture. Inside each bedroom, the user will experience a playful connection between the building and the interior design, where bath tubs, wardrobes and bathrooms are inserted within the deep shell of the cube. Moving between levels, occupants will be treated to glimpses of the neighboring chalet, enhancing the connection with their temporary neighbors whilst simultaneously providing amazing views of the surrounding landscape.
