All That Jazz

mttb as Architects

‘All That Jazz’ is the first and the oldest jazz club in South Korea, which is opened in 1976. It’s the shrine of Korea Jazz culture that provide a stage for the unknown jazz musicians for more than 40 years since 1980 when jazz was a wasteland in Korea. It means that this place has a lot more meaning than just a commercial space, but a cultural space that connects through a jazz.

The space has a 274.48m2 area. The space is start from the classical entrance, when it could be faced at the end of the corridor of 2nd floor. When the doors open, there’s a corridor with a curved glass wall and red lightings. We placed transition space through light and glass so that it could have a different materialistic identity with the hall where the music flows. We intended to make a rhythmical space experience for our visitors through this transitional space.

Music makes us to memorize a special moment and to remind the feeling and space. We extruded the visual identity of the ‘All That Jazz’ through reminding of the old version of the space where the red jazz flows around. We surround the space with the red layers of the visual identity that is only compressed by the 'All That Jazz’ which seems like a hard tissue that is made to protect the history and heritage of the brand itself.

Furthermore, we placed the functional area on the surrounded red layers. DJ booth to control the sound of the stage and bar area, concierge desk were set on those areas, so the staff could look around the whole stage and hall area. Also, the sofa booth area are placed at the opposite with the stage. We intended the stage are able to be focused and audience could concentrate to music through this simple composition.

We also surrounded the stage and hall with the red curtains. We interpret this curtains that block the lights and views from outdoor as the symbolic items that protect the history and heritage of the brand and as the images to show the brand identity. The contrast with the density of heavy volume of the red curtains and the dark space makes the space could have more rich and charming mood.

The object with the lighting and the photo of the musicians on the ceiling of the hall and wine glass rack are recreated from the object that was used at the initial 'All That Jazz’ so that makes the visitors could remind the past of the brand.

The space for music is finally completed when the musician and audience could harmonize together with music that filled the whole space. We hope that the visitors could truly feel the red jazz rhythm again and been fascinated to the 'All That Jazz’.
