Space Matrix designed and built American Express’ Bengaluru office as a vibrant vertical micro-campus - a dynamic, human-centric workspace built on empathy, flexibility, and connection. The result is a workplace that not only inspires collaboration and innovation but also prioritizes employee well-being at every level.
When American Express partnered with Space Matrix, the vision was clear: to create a workplace revolution. The new Bengaluru office needed to go beyond aesthetics - to embody the brand’s dynamic spirit, foster belonging, and seamlessly adapt to an ever-evolving business world.
Empathy at the Heart of Design
The foundation of this project was empathy - understanding what truly matters to Amex employees. Through extensive research and engagement, Space Matrix uncovered key insights: employees sought inclusivity, a sense of ownership, and environments that spark creativity and collaboration. This human-centric perspective shaped every element of the design.
A Vertical Micro-Campus Experience
The transformed workplace unfolds as a vertical micro-campus spread across five floors - each designed as a self-sustaining ecosystem. Social zones hum with energy, meeting rooms spark brainstorming sessions, and serene corners offer quiet retreats for focus and rejuvenation.
The design encourages fluid movement throughout the day, promoting interaction and connection across teams. Each floor embraces a distinct theme inspired by “Hear, Nourish, See, Speak, and Sow.”
- The ‘Hear’ floor features a buzzing coffee bar and cozy lounges, ideal for informal conversations.
- The ‘See’ floor brings creativity to life with art installations and open workspaces bathed in natural light.
- Every level offers a unique sensory and emotional experience - transforming routine workdays into moments of inspiration.
Flexibility that Adapts with You
Recognizing the fast-paced nature of business, flexibility became a key design principle. The modular layout allows spaces to evolve with changing needs - individual workstations can seamlessly reconfigure into clusters, while meeting and collaboration zones flex to accommodate shifting team structures and project demands. This adaptability ensures the space remains future-ready and relevant as the organization continues to grow.
The ‘Mother Floor’ - The Pulse of the Workplace
The 9th floor, known as the ‘Mother Floor,’ serves as the central hub - home to key shared amenities and essential support functions. The remaining work floors focus on productivity and team engagement, each equipped with localized amenities for convenience. This structure strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and community, bringing the concept of the vertical campus to life.
A Human-Centric Success Story
The transformation delivered measurable results:
4x increase in alternative work points, empowering employees with greater autonomy and choice.
3x growth in collaboration and community spaces, amplifying interaction and teamwork.
Beyond numbers, the new workplace fostered a strong sense of pride and belonging among employees. It became a living expression of American Express’ brand values - empathy, excellence, and care - woven seamlessly into the spatial experience.
Integrating the Bluework Approach, the design also championed sustainability and well-being, creating an environment where employees feel energized, supported, and inspired to perform at their best.
Redefining the Modern Workplace
American Express’ Bengaluru office stands as a testament to the transformative power of human-centric design. By blending empathy, adaptability, and innovation, Space Matrix has created more than just an office - it’s a thriving ecosystem where people connect, ideas flourish, and the future of work comes alive.
This project exemplifies Space Matrix’s enduring mission: to craft work environments that inspire, empower, and enable organizations to thrive in a constantly evolving world.
