The University Library of the University of Amsterdam forms the beating heart of the Faculty of Humanities’ city campus at the historic Binnengasthuisterrein. Through a careful interplay of listed heritage buildings and contemporary new construction, it creates a dynamic, accessible, and future-proof learning environment where education, research, and interaction converge.
The library is housed in the former Second Surgical Clinic and Nurses’ Residence, both listed monuments dating from around 1900, complemented by contemporary additions. Covering the original courtyard with a light-filled atrium has transformed the separate buildings into a coherent whole of approximately 16,000 m². The atrium serves as the spatial and social centre, anchored by the sculptural “Tree of Wisdom” staircase, which connects all floors and functions.
A distinctive feature is the biomimetic atrium roof: an elegant, self-supporting steel structure that stretches like a leaf over old and new. This design preserves the historic buildings while maximizing daylight, enhancing indoor climate comfort, and supporting sustainability. The library offers a diverse mix of study spaces, teaching and meeting rooms, a café, and multifunctional areas designed for intensive daily use.
Facing the city, the building presents a new identity through a façade screen bearing the line “But do read, it doesn’t say what is says” from Martinus Nijhoff’s Awater, rendered in the 24 languages taught at the University of Amsterdam.
Former wards and the surgical theatre, once used for healthcare, have been transformed into bright, multifunctional study and teaching spaces. Sustainability is central, expressed through heritage reuse, energy-efficient installations, and an atrium and atrium roof that function as a climate buffer and rainwater collection system.
More than a place to study, the Amsterdam University Library is a vibrant academic hub where past and future meet, and knowledge flourishes within centuries-old walls, connecting students, researchers in a cohesive learning environment.
