Contemporary Retreat Blends Triathlon Lifestyle with Coastal Atmosphere

Designed by architect Mariana Maisonnave, this 140 m² apartment in Florianópolis, southern Brazil, was conceived as a vacation retreat for a couple deeply connected to sports and outdoor living. Passionate about triathlon, the homeowners envisioned a welcoming, practical and timeless space where they could relax between training sessions and seasonal stays by the beach.

The project was developed alongside the construction phase of the building, with full supervision of the process. While the original bedroom layout was preserved, the architect introduced strategic modifications to the social areas and circulation. The removal of the wall that separated the entrance hall expanded the sense of openness and allowed for the creation of a custom millwork piece with dual functionality. Facing the private area, it serves as linen storage, while on the entrance side it becomes a glass cabinet with a built-in wine cellar, enhancing the arrival experience.

A dedicated storage space for the bicycle and triathlon equipment was also created, ensuring organization and practicality in everyday life. Integrated into the millwork, the area was carefully designed to safely accommodate the bike while providing easy access to sports accessories, preserving the apartment’s aesthetics and preventing technical items from interfering with the light and relaxed atmosphere of the social spaces.

With a contemporary aesthetic and airy atmosphere, the project highlights a curated selection of Brazilian design pieces that reinforce identity and sophistication without excess. Furniture and objects by Guilherme Wentz, Maurício Bonfim, Natasha Schlobach and Ricardo Vidigal compose the interiors with balance, emphasizing contemporary Brazilian design.

Materiality plays a leading role throughout the project. Mariana prioritized natural and timeless elements such as wood, linen, cotton, stone and natural cane applied to millwork doors and details that reinforce the coastal atmosphere. Turkish travertine brick cladding covers the living room and powder room walls, creating visual continuity between the spaces while establishing a sophisticated and neutral base palette.

Lighting follows a minimalist concept, focused on indirect solutions that provide visual comfort and wellbeing in everyday use. The lighting design subtly enhances textures and volumes, reinforcing the welcoming atmosphere envisioned for the apartment.
