The first phase of the Barbados National Performing Arts Pavilion opened with a performance of Mansa Musa at Carifesta XV. Designed by Adjaye Associates, the pavilion is conceived as a ‘meanwhile use’ venue that will evolve over the next 12 months into the Barbados National Performing Arts Centre. This strategy off ers Barbadians an immediate cultural space while advancing a long-term vision for a national performance hub and promoting low-carbon architecture in the Caribbean.
The centre’s structural engineer, StructureCraft, conceptualised the solution for the all-wood 50 foot tall pavilion, demonstrating how structure can become architectural expression. The sloped perimeter canopies are designed to be reconfi gured as roof structure for phase II of the project. Slender cables tension the sloped columns to the foundations, creating a lateral bracing system designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. By embedding the temporary pavilion into the permanent foundations, the project minimizes waste, extends material life, and sets a new benchmark for environmentally responsible design.
Phase II of the Barbados National Performing Arts Centre is scheduled to open in 2026 as part of Adjaye Associates’ Barbados Heritage District masterplan, following the completion of the Enslaved Burial Ground at Newton Memorial. The existing timber frame and foundations will anchor the 85,000-square-foot centre, which will house a 1,500-seat auditorium, rehearsal studios, public terraces, and cultural amenities.
Timber defi nes the project as a sustainable, expressive structural material that matures with character, underscoring its commitment to ecology and to the enduring relationship between nature, culture, and place. Mass timber enabled a rapid, component-based assembly that was critical to the project’s demanding schedule, with just four months from start of conception to the opening of the Carifesta XV Festival. The resulting timber structure demonstrates a pioneering approach to joinery and long-span design.
By merging immediate use with long-term vision, the Pavilion gives Barbadians access to world-class performance space today while laying the foundations for a landmark institution that will celebrate the island’s cultural life for generations to come.
