Bay Front: Where the Landscape Moves with the Sea
On the eastern edge of Al Khobar, where the city opens toward the Arabian Gulf, Bay Front introduces a contemporary waterfront experience shaped by movement, ecology, and public life. Designed by BINA Architects + Engineers as Landscape Architect, the project moves beyond the conventional idea of a promenade, presenting the waterfront as a living landscape where people, nature, architecture, and the sea come together in one continuous experience.
At the heart of the project is a clear design philosophy: the landscape should feel like an extension of the coast. Rather than imposing a rigid urban language on the waterfront, the design draws from the natural character of coastal environments — the movement of waves, the softness of sand, the texture of dune planting, and the openness of the horizon. These elements were translated into a landscape language that feels fl uid, calm, and responsive to its setting.
One of Bay Front’s most distinctive design features is the use of wave motion as a parametric design generator. The movement of the sea was abstracted into fl owing patterns that shape the hardscape, paving fi elds, pedestrian routes, planting beds, and spatial organization. In this approach, the ground plane becomes more than a surface; it becomes a narrative device, reflecting the energy of the Arabian Gulf and guiding visitors through the waterfront with a sense of natural movement.
Planting plays a central role in defi ning the identity of the landscape. The softscape palette was selected to respond to Al Khobar’s climate while reinforcing the project’s coastal character. Ornamental grasses, drought-tolerant shrubs, coastal groundcovers, and shade trees are arranged in natural compositions that evoke dune landscapes and seaside vegetation. These planted layers soften the built edges, frame views, provide seasonal texture, and enhance pedestrian comfort throughout the public realm.
Bay Front also focuses on creating an eco-experience for visitors. The landscape encourages walking, gathering, resting, dining, and contemplation within an environment that feels close to nature. Water features, shaded seating areas, public art, lighting, and native-inspired planting work together to transform the waterfront into a destination that can be experienced throughout the day and into the evening.
The public spaces are designed to support different rhythms of use. During the day, shaded paths and planted gardens provide comfort and visual relief. At sunset, the waterfront becomes a social setting animated by dining, leisure, and gathering spaces. At night, lighting and water features add a new layer of atmosphere, turning the landscape into a vibrant coastal destination. This day-to-night transformation strengthens Bay Front’s role as both a civic and recreational landmark for Al Khobar.
A key strength of the project lies in the integration between architecture and landscape. Built structures, shaded canopies, paving patterns, planting beds, seating, and furniture are connected through a unifi ed coastal identity.
