The BH Hotel is a building that arises not only from it’s urban context but from it’s cultural context as well. It takes peculiar values from the Colombian Caribbean region, specifically from the city of Barranquilla, famous for it’s colorful carnival celebrated in march every year. A city that has transformed itself into a modern metropolis on the past few years but keeps it’s festive and joyful personality deeply rooted.
The concept for the project raises from this idea, and proposes a discreet and sober building on the outside, with it’s cubic, clean, pure and modern volume painted on a fresh bright palette of colors, with no intention of crying for attention from the outside; and in the inside, it turns into a colorful, playful, festive series of spaces, that when you enter them, you catch a sense of happiness, much of how it happens when you enter Barranquilla.
If buildings had personalities, this one would be elegant and refined, with an extraordinary, uncomplicated and dynamic character.
Being located on a city with an extremely warm weather all year long, the building protects itself with thick masonry walls and small openings on the facades that are directly exposed to the sun, and opens widely to its front façade, protecting it with external metallic shades that zigzag all the way to the top with a changing rhythm, adding dynamism to a static composition.
It’s unique indoor feel is enforced by the textures, colors, graffiti like murals and the lighting design, that “paints” with shadow and light.
