CAP Bages. Refurbishment and extension of a health care building

The original building was built in the early 70s. Its design was a repeated sanitary building model made by the old Ministry of Health. Same building can be found in different villages of the country. Unlike other buildings of this type, the curvature of this building is given by the requirement to be adapted to the railroad tracks that passed by the street Carrasco i Formiguera. After 40 years of life had become obsolete.

Originally the building was oriented towards Pere III Avenue. Its symmetrical position facing the axis of the street and the position of the access floor to a higher level (at the end of a grand staircase), gave the building a dominant image over the public space in addition to denying their relationship with the Plaza Carrasco i Formiguera. A correct accessibility is not possible.

One of first decisions was focused on restoring a closer relationship between Public Services and Citizens; Architecture and Public Space. 1. Access Floor moved to the ground floor and the difficult access with stairs was removed. 2. The low annexed volumes were pulled down and a new public was built instead. 3. The position of the new access and circulation core at the south façade accentuates the curve and it rotates the orientation of the main facade towards Plaza Carrasco i Formiguera.

The building, with six storey high, has a total of 5.735m2. The restoration and extension work were performed by holding 50% activity of health services. Due to this, work was thought in three phases and two stair cores that had to work simultaneously, one for construction team and one for users.

The three new elements (two extensions on each side and the new stairs core at south façade) were finally integrated throughout the building by the new façade cladding. Furthermore, the new cladding is adapted to thermal insulation criteria of existing rules.

Downstairs area is located the emergency department, the lobby, general radiology and bedroom area staff. On the first floor, second and third are the general practices and specialists. On higher plants are placed the administrative areas, locker rooms and training rooms. Waiting rooms and most dynamic areas are located on the south facade directly related to public space and views over the city.
