A web of windowless hallways made up a third of this Carnegie Hill apartment. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the prewar unit’s only fireplace was buried in one of the halls.
We love this kind of project because the delta for improvement is so high. For example, by simply removing walls between dark halls and windows, the little rooms jumped in scale. Now, sunlight reaches every corner.
We moved the kitchen from the far end of a dark hall to the heart of the apartment. This lets the owners live in the light, while an etched glass partition keeps kitchen mess out of sight. The new layout enlarges the living and dining spaces while giving them back the fireplace they deserve.
