Located in the García Ginerés neighborhood in Mérida, Yucatán, Casa Ahimsa is a renovation project that seeks to preserve the essence of a home built in the 1950s, respecting its Mid-Century style while adapting it to a contemporary vision. The restoration of the original house was carried out in its entirety, maintaining the pre-existing structure and highlighting its most distinctive architectural elements.
The project’s design reflects the client’s deep connection with Japanese culture, incorporating elements that evoke serenity, balance, and harmony with nature. This influence is materialized in various spaces throughout the house, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and well-being.
The meditation studio was designed with inspiration from a traditional Japanese house, evoking the simplicity and tranquility characteristic of these structures. Sliding doors, inspired by fusuma, allow for a flexible division of spaces, generating a sense of fluidity and privacy.
The swimming pool, conceived as a "Yucatecan mangrove," organically integrates into the environment thanks to a landscape design by JNMX Jardines Nativos Mexicanos. The selection of plant species strengthens the connection with the local ecosystem, achieving a balance between architecture and the surrounding nature.
Adjacent to the pool, a pergola inspired by traditional Japanese theaters frames the landscape and creates a space for contemplation. Its strategic positioning allows for a direct visual connection with the muro llorón (weeping wall), which serves as a scenic focal point within the ensemble.
Inside, the spaces have been designed to foster interaction and comfort. The social area integrates the kitchen and dining room, while a mezzanine houses the living area and a relaxation space, generating a spatial dynamic enriched by varying levels. The interior design respects the home's Mid-Century essence, reinterpreting it with contemporary materials and textures. The selection of furniture and the color palette, inspired by Japanese landscapes, reinforce the feeling of balance and warmth.
Casa Ahimsa represents a dialogue between past and present, where architectural restoration and cultural influence converge in a space of serenity and timeless beauty.
