Casa Candina

Casa Candina

Álvarez-Díaz & Villalón as Architects

On September 19th, 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by a Category 5 Hurricane that left the island exposed to a new reality-the need for resilient housing. For several years, one of the bright spots within a lackluster economy had been the arrival of high-worth individuals who relocated to the Island for a better quality of life, while taking advantage of tax benefits. This exposed reality and the lack of a resilient housing product could jeopardize the possibility to continue to promote Puerto Rico as an ideal place for expats to move in. That is why Casa Candina will be developed. A state-of-the-art building, designed with sustainable and resilient elements that could weather any storm and provide safe housing for this group of individuals. The family luxury building will be located in Condado next to one of the best urban-beach strips on the Island. This residential tower will consist of 30 apartment units of three bedrooms, convertible to four bedrooms. The apartments will range in size from 3,450-to-3,650 SF. Luxury residential amenities will be offered: lap pool, arcade, media, meeting and activity rooms. All floor plans provide the flexibility of merging interior and exterior living spaces to allow openness, natural ventilation, and daylight, thus responding to context and taking advantage of our tropical scenery. The building’s design will benefit from its location, by using renewable and alternate sources of energy, as well as employing passive design strategies for energy efficiency. It will minimize its carbon footprint and incorporate building innovation to reduce its operational costs. Casa Candina’s design aims to create a Place of Purpose by developing a new community for its residents by providing responsible, context-driven and environmentally-conscious design that also ensures the owner’s welfare.
