The project starts with an initial consideration of the state of the land and its hydrographical rules. The terrain is flat and contains, in addition to the project site, other buildings. To the east, the land turns into woodland and slopes steeply down towards the Scalcoggia stream; to the west, the land climbs. A small stream, mapped by the Reticolo Minore, enters this orographic condition. It transforms a large part of the plain into land with a strong presence of water.

During the meltwater period, the phenomenon intensifies, as the flat land is the recipient of water percolating from upstream. For this reason, the design envisages that the water continues to move under the house, so that there is no contact between the inhabited part and the ground, which is possible thanks to the basement covered in reclaimed stone.

Another reasoning, consequent to the state of the site, concerns the weight of the building. To avoid subsidence of the foundation system on soft ground, it is necessary to construct a lightweight building. An xlam wall system constructs the building on two floors. The construction system also makes it possible to shorten construction times and manage the logistics of transporting materials in a simple manner.

The project assumes a volumetric decomposition with three juxtaposed bodies characterised by three independent roofs, reminiscent of spontaneous architecture. It is important to emphasise that the location of the building, with respect to the road and the access path, is always foreshortened, always affecting two elevations at the same time.

Each individual unit consists of two floors and has its own entrance. The entrance floor coincides with the sleeping area, while the first floor houses the living area. The need is to exceed a certain height, so that during the winter period, the most lived-in part of the house remains free, sunny and open to the landscape.

All this starts from the realisation that the land around the building is extremely small and that therefore the relationship with the outside must be structured starting from the inside. The window is therefore a real place of relationship, between inside and outside. Wherever possible the sill is lowered to allow seating.

The design for the choice of materials is based on two specific considerations. The first, concerns the wood technologies used for the structural part, which must not be betrayed; wood is, wood must be. The second concerns colours. The prevailing tones are those of the surrounding landscape; they are the dark tones of tree barks, they are the autumnal colours of grass and leaves. For this reason, the wall cladding is made of charred larch wood. This solution makes it possible not to have artificial treatments, to have an almost natural surface that is stable over time. The windows are framed with lime plaster surfaces in the local earth colours. The roof is made of small stone shingles
