The proposed project for the Casa della Musica (House of Music) in Arborea stems from the desire to regenerate and repurpose the former headquarters of the “Workshops and Houses of Artisans,” a building with a strong manufacturing footprint, located along the main axis of city services.
The sober language and essential composition of the facades prompted a design approach aimed at giving the entire structure a renewed semantic and symbolic value, transforming it into a recognizable cultural landmark, capable of engaging with the urban context.
The entrance assumes a magnetic and identifying role: a volumetric caesura, carved into the main body, guides the visitor from the street to the interior, orchestrating the flow of people and anticipating the experience of the space. This architectural threshold is configured as a welcoming gesture, capable of announcing the building’s public and cultural function.
The interior spaces described are part of a second functional lot, already defined in the design phase but not yet implemented. The main volume is a fluid, open space, free of rigid compartmentalization, designed to accommodate diverse uses and adapt to changing scenarios. Two partition walls define a transitional space toward the secondary functions, suggesting a path that alternates between opening and threshold. The limited height of these elements allows the entirety of the hall to be perceived, enhanced by the rhythm of the wooden trusses that punctuate the roof like a suspended musical score.
The secondary building, accessed through this connecting space, is intended to accommodate support functions: the administrative block, the rehearsal rooms—both individual and collective—designed with attention to acoustic insulation, and a service core that serves as a distribution hub. Set back is the auditorium, the symbolic and functional heart of the project, conceived as a performance space, endowed with generous height and capacity to offer an immersive and shared experience.
The project restores dignity and meaning to a disused industrial building, rewriting its vocation through architecture. From a place of artisanal production to a space for cultural creation, the Casa della Musica presents itself as a new civic epicenter, forging relationships between memory, community and contemporaneity.
