In the vibrant heart of Palermo, just steps away from the historic Teatro Politeama, a former cellar dating back to the 1930s is reborn as a designer residence thanks to the work of Puccio Collodoro Architects.

The design challenge was ambitious: to reclaim a long, dark, airless space and transform it into a living home—open to light and rich in atmosphere.

Upon crossing the threshold, you enter a universe where functionality meets emotion. The double-height living area, dominated by a sculptural suspended metal staircase, is the visual focal point of the home. This element, halfway between architecture and artwork, merges seamlessly with a natural oak storage unit, creating a continuum between form and function.

The atmosphere of Casa Matì is built on the harmony of materials, colors, and volumes.

The project reveals a refined sensibility in the choice of materials: natural oak reigns as a noble, warm essence, found in the herringbone parquet flooring, bespoke furniture, built-in walls, and the walk-in wardrobe. Resin introduces a contemporary materiality and visual continuity. Antique cement tiles, used as poetic inserts, add a nostalgic dimension reinterpreted with a fresh perspective.

New skylights, carefully selected materials, and the layout of custom-made furnishings transformed a constraint into a strength, giving rise to a coherent language of solids and voids, light and matter, geometry and detail.

Casa Matì is more than just a home: it is an architectural narrative in which every element—from the suspended staircase to the cement tile rug, from the invisible door to the sculpted fireplace—contributes to a story of memory, innovation, and timeless beauty. A former cellar, transformed through a cultured and sensitive design approach, into one of the most captivating contemporary residences in the Sicilian capital.
