The house as a sequence of thresholds
A few metres from the Ionian coast, in an area of margin between built fabric and rural landscape, Casa SR develops a reflection on the theme of the threshold as a principle of organisation of domestic space. The project builds a calibrated system of passages between inside and outside, between sharing and confidentiality, between openness to the landscape and protection of intimacy. Matter, light and geometry thus define a home capable of accommodating different uses, always in balance between collective life and private dimension.
The need for balance
Designed as a holiday home and at the same time as a place of support for frequent business stays, the house responds to the need to offer spaces suitable for welcoming family and friends. The client was looking for a home capable of alternating moments of sharing and occasions of isolation, tranquillity and rest. From here arises a system that does not rigidly separate the functions, but organises them through a progression of spaces with different degrees of openness and intimacy.
Relationships and connections
The house is spread over a single level and is organised by two main directions. The east-west axis connects the spaces of collective life - entrance, living room, swimming pool and outbuilding - through a continuous travertine flooring that crosses the building and extends the living room in the open space. This public sequence is flanked by the north-south axis of the most private area, an internal path that distributes the bedrooms and introduces a more collected dimension, made of passages, stops and controlled views towards the internal gardens.
The threshold as a principle of living
The project defines a network of intermediate spaces that constantly filters the relationship between home and landscape. The rooms do not overlook the main front, but on small intimate courtyards, while patios, white walls, openings and fences modulate light, views to the outside and levels of privacy. The local tuff material envelope contains and protects the living, while the system of outdoor spaces - from the most reserved courtyards to the open garden with swimming pool - builds a continuous gradient between inside and outside. The result is a home in which each environment finds its own degree of openness, without clear solutions but through calibrated and coherent steps.
