In the free-spirited city of Surat, Gujarat, a 3300 Sq. Ft. apartment designed by the Principal designer Sachi Patel of The Design Mist, stands as a testament of thoughtful design and synergistic vision. The Cinnamon Sky transcends the concept of a mere residence; it is a tranquil sanctuary personifying the client’s desire for a unique living experience.
Desiring a place where they could truly unwind and experience utmost relaxation, the clients envisioned a home incorporating a distinct design language and palette. With clarity for the overall ambiance and aesthetics, they wanted their home to be a departure from the everyday hustle. This simple yet clear brief served as the foundation for the firm’s design considerations in the initial stage focused on offering both interconnectedness and distinctive characteristics in every space.
The design process began with a thorough analysis of zoning and spatial planning, establishing a distinct hierarchy between private and common areas within the apartment. Spaces were strategically divided to evoke a sense of openness and subtle grandeur. Conceptual presentations and mood boards played a crucial role in refining the core themes. The designer’s vision centered on the cohesive strength of selected materials, creating serene compositions by integrating varied textures within a unified material palette.
As one enters the house, the foyer, with its utilization of veneer in a customized grid creates a striking first impression. The foyer leads the users to the heart of The Cinnamon Sky- its interconnected living, dining and lounge areas. The living area is an amalgam of contemporary and perennial elements, emphasized by an in-situ crafted wooden screening and textured painted back wall. The Statuario quartz TV unit featuring a rare half-round edge detail subtly merges with the ambiance while the fluted details on textured wall and the plywood grid partitions add a sense of linearity to the space. The armchair hued in rustic warm, bring a contrast to the otherwise muted colored space creating a lively living space for the inhabitants.
The versatile lounge, seamlessly connected to the living area, features acoustic fabric paneling and a sofa-cum-bed, transforming it into a multipurpose room. A striking artwork enhances the space, while sliding doors offer the flexibility to create a separate area or open it to the dining room, adapting to the family's needs. The adjacent dining area, showcases a tapestry artwork, a quartz-top table, and tan chairs, following the living area's materials and palette. A custom veneer console with a unique stone pillar detail commands attention even in its quiet corner.
Civil modifications were made in the kitchen, expanding it to incorporate a kitchen island and a larger wash area, enhancing its functionality. The kitchen island, featuring a wooden counter ledge for quick meals, complements the family’s contemporary lifestyle. Designed for seamless integration with the rest of the home, the kitchen boasts a modular setup with tall veneer units and thermo-laminated drawers. Maintaining efficiency in utility spaces, the common basin area was given a modern upgrade with subway tiles and an in-situ molded basin.
The bedrooms in The Cinnamon Sky embody a unique design language, exuding both strength and serenity. Thoughtfully planned, the master bedroom offers residents a picturesque view, while its attached deck serves as the perfect finishing touch. As a prudent contribution to the client’s professional endeavors as a makeup artist, a built-in vanity drawer and ledge were beautifully crafted. Adding to the versatility, the structure can also be utilized as a functional study table. The Italian stone cut and assembled in herringbone pattern on site complements the vertical wooden panel standing tall behind the bed back. The state-of-the-art coffee table set with uniquely entwined fabric elevates the overall aesthetic of the deck.
The parents' bedroom, illuminated by a spacious L-shaped window, is bathed in natural sunlight throughout the day, subtly enhancing its neutral palette. A fluted veneer door lends a classic touch to the entrance, while sheer white curtains infuse the space with lightness. A bold maroon wallpaper, reflecting their appreciation for art, adds character, complemented by understated wall paneling for a refined aesthetic. Meanwhile, the daughter’s bedroom radiates delicate feminine elegance, highlighted by a pink-hued artwork behind the bed. Color-coordinated curtains, a custom-designed neutral-toned bed, and matching side tables seamlessly enhance the pink accents.
Every element in the project basks in the light of modern elegance. The material palette of the project is a contemporary depiction of sophisticated textures and contrasts. The client’s appreciation for art was thoughtfully integrated throughout the design. For instance, the prayer room is imbued with a Pichwai-themed artwork, adding a touch of spiritual artistry. By meticulously addressing the aesthetics and functionality and accommodating both cohesiveness and individual expression of the spaces, The Design Mist has crafted a home that is a testament to the successful implementation of a considerate design.
