Civic Center by KM 429 architecture (Alessio Bernardelli and Simona Avigni architects) + Francesco Pergettiarchitect + Serena Manfredi architect

“Isola Garibaldi” is a project about memory, a recall to Milan city history, a building meant to interpret the subject without assuming the idea of monument , an essential portray of a complex urban design.

Evoking close memories of European city piazzas, a Paris flavoured garden, modern palaces as a background driving Milan to the Third Millennium and then a tiny Milanese house!

Traditional fabrics and railings, a city section, a small old house.

Building a civic centre means the creation of a contest where different activities take place, where people get in relation and interact.

The park has been from the very beginning the sparking light of the whole project: a combination of pedestrian paths crossing varieties of botanic species, placed like books in a library.

Isola Garibaldi directly interacts with this botanical frame and take away a part of it from the borders.

Nevertheless, remarkable is the osmotic dialogue between the two elements, where the urban gardens created on the terrace give back the parte taken away.

We might describe it as a concrete house, for citizen and any person too.

The lines and architectures are inspired by the traditional Milanese style houses, yards and walkways.

The project itself evokes the Nineteen century in Italy; building recalling the traditional Milanese style such as those build by Giovanni Munzio.

The civic center is not meant to harmonize with the new houses in the same area but rather tries to create a new relationship with the historical frame, drawing from it the inspirations and be part of it.

On this basis, the project has been conceived to be part of the area avoiding the subordination to it, rejecting to be classified as monument but rather as active part of a dynamic e contemporary dimension.
