CMC Building was built in 1992 as an "intelligent, hi-tech and efficient" building reflecting the character of the organization. Architecture, interior design and services were integrated to achieve the company’s objectives. The key words that define the nature of work space and the furniture are:- computers and no paper, unconventional, communication, high technology, intelligence, ergonomics, modularity, flexibility, open plan, privacy, informal interaction.
CMC was the first intelligent building in India. The building design made special use of daylight. Its core space is a small atrium that brings daylight into the inner space. Office spaces are wrapped around the atrium like a helix. Floor divisions disappear, encouraging people to walk up. 'Man’s search for the divine', a set of sculptures by Suruchi Chand reinforce the helical theme. The building has no more than 25% of the external surface as windows but glass is used as a cladding material as it stays free of fungus in humid climate.
