An Oasis: Tight Lot, Big Light - A Modern Take on Midcentury Living

Designing a midcentury-inspired modern home on a tight semi-urban lot posed a unique challenge: how to open the living spaces to abundant southern light while shielding them from the busy street just beyond. The solution came in the form of a series of freestanding black Roman-brick walls that define private courtyard patios - creating a serene interplay between openness and seclusion. The result is a luminous urban retreat that feels both transparent and deeply private.

Despite its modest 2,157-square-foot footprint, the home lives far larger than its size suggests. By opening every main living space to the sheltered courtyards, the design extends the interior outward, creating an effortless flow between inside and out. A structurally daring, seemingly floating ensemble of flat roofs unites the house under a continuous plane of light and shadow, while the black brick walls and material palette span seamlessly from exterior to interior—further dissolving the boundaries between the two.

Beyond its architectural poetry, the home performs with quiet energy-efficiency: in addition to  solar panels,  a continuous insulation and air barrier, carbon-capture concrete, and reclaimed wood, its flat roofs are carefully tuned to invite the low winter sun and block the high summer rays, ensuring year-round comfort and sustainability without compromise.
