Colour Way House

The Stylesmiths as Interior Architects

Melbourne’s inner city tranquil suburb of Camberwell, Australia is known for historic residences rich in character and soul, Colour Way House is no exception. The 19th century Victorian weatherboard home has been internally re-vamped into a sophisticated family home for the young family residing there.

The Stylesmiths were engaged to develop an interior inspired by the eclectic New York apartment of American-Italian supermodel Carmen Dell’orefice, laden with plush fabrics, bold colour and vintage pieces which the homeowners love. Always appearing artistic and chic, the fashion icon comments that “it’s more about taste than money… it’s all about the fit.” Following the same mantra, this project was all about choosing elements to befit the property and incorporating kitsch pieces of mixed, repurposed vintage furniture. Embracing what already existed, The Stylesmiths were entrusted to infuse the heritage home with fearless colour that flatters the existing architectural features, ushering in an enchanting new chapter for the property.

Creative license was granted to modernise the original Victorian rooms by way of refreshed furnishings, surfaces and fixtures. Every room is part of an overall concept, a colour story made up of swatches grounded in pastel base tones and contrasted in the layers of interior decoration. In the sitting room, playful speckled wallpaper in soft blue and pink sets the tone, complimented by the clients’ well-loved art deco armchairs, re-upholstered in lush bottle green velvet. Deep navy, black and gold accents add an extra pizzaz to the space, reflecting the personalities of those living there.

Being able to reuse furniture that has sentimental value is rewarding for both client and interior designer alike. Thus, with its good bones, the circular dining table was also re-fashioned with Black Japan lacquer and glass top to give it a new lease of life. Cherished posters and prints were similarly respected and thoughtfully included in the communal living areas that are once again beautiful and functional.

Materials, fabrics and lighting have been meticulously balanced to create a series of unique monochromatic hues, allowing each space to take on a distinct feel and atmosphere, consecutively telling the colour story. Where the dining room feels light and breezy, with pendant fanning through the air above, the upstairs landing is carpeted in bright magenta, luxe and lovely underfoot. In each case, colour effortlessly cocoons the room delivering opulence with restraint.
