In a narrow North London terrace once bursting at the seams with unmet potential, a family of four found their forever home, thanks to a bold and emotionally intelligent design vision by Jessica Graham from The Stylesmiths. What was once a cluttered, storage-starved space has been entirely reimagined into a layered, tactile, and joyfully expressive home that meets the demands of daily family life without compromising on aesthetic ambition.

From the outset, the design brief was clear: create a vibrant, cohesive, and deeply personal interior that reflected the individuality and warmth of the homeowners, a young couple with two small children. “They love to entertain and wanted a home that felt as warm and welcoming as they are,” Graham explains. “But above all, they needed clever space and storage solutions to match their growing family.” The layout had to be clever, working within a narrow footprint meant maximising every inch. Before the renovation, the house lacked structure and storage. With belongings spilling into hallways and floors, the Stylesmiths inherited a home that visibly told the story of a family in need of systems, rhythm, and room to breathe.

The transformation was comprehensive. A new loft extension added a guest room and home office, while 2 children’s bedrooms, a master bedroom with a master ensuite and family bathroom defined the first floor. Downstairs, the kitchen, WC, utility, hallway, and living spaces were entirely reimagined, with the existing kitchen updated through fresh fittings, paintwork, and splashback, proof that not everything needs to be replaced to feel new. Natural timber floors and rich finishes now run throughout, tying the home together with continuity and soul.

Central to Graham’s redesign was the interplay of colour and materiality. From deep moody blues and earthy greens to playful pops of coral, each room tells a distinct story while remaining connected. “The clients didn’t want anything beige or soulless. They were clear that bold colour was part of who they are,” she shares. Inspiration came not from art or travel but from the clients themselves. “It was amazing, Diana and Asim would turn up to meetings wearing exactly the colours they gravitated toward in the home. Their wardrobes reflected their palette before we even locked it in.”

Working closely in 3D, each room was planned to strike a balance between personality and longevity. The darker spaces, like the intimate main bedroom or cocoon-like library, are counterbalanced by the lighter, youthful energy of the children’s rooms. A muted, calming hallway acts as the connective tissue, linking bold spaces with a sense of cohesion.

Pattern plays a critical role throughout. From floral ceilings and textured upholstery to bespoke cabinetry, it animates the home and gives the eye room to roam. “When you’re using strong colour in every room, texture and pattern become even more important to break things up and create depth,” Graham notes.

The joinery is a testament to craftsmanship and tailored living. “Every drawer, shelf and wardrobe was bespoke, because every person in the house had different needs.” In the children’s rooms, storage is cleverly integrated into playful structures like a slide bed with a velvet-lined tunnel, and wardrobes reveal pops of colour that surprise and delight.

In the master suite, woven wallcoverings elevate wardrobe doors into objects of texture and warmth. “The children’s spaces were one of my favourite things to design,” she reflects. “We didn’t want anything too babyish or overly mature. It had to be fun without being throwaway and the slide bed was such a joyful solution.”

Behind the polished outcome was a process not without its challenges. “Getting the right builder on board from the beginning is so important and unfortunately, that didn’t happen at first. But once we stepped in and reassembled the right team, everything clicked into place.” For a home that accommodates both collective joy and quiet retreat, spatial planning was key.

“We opened things up where we could, but always allowed for privacy and personalisation. That balance of togetherness and retreat is so essential in family life.” And in every space from the vibrant living room to the cocooning bedrooms there’s evidence of love, intention, and humour.

As day-to-day life unfolds, the design gently supports the family. It was created for a space for pillow forts and parties, bedtime stories and bold ideas. A home that celebrates individuality, and elevates the everyday into something enduring.
